About Us

"We aim to preserve, protect and advance the heritage and traditions of the island of Whalsay."

Research and Community use

The History Group members are happy to help with your research. In the reading room you are welcome to browse through printouts of our own research collated into folders covering a huge range of subjects such as weddings, fishing, knitting, crofting, housing, the RAF station and healthcare. For family history research, our huge digital database collection is complete with files that have a name search function and photos have been scanned and tagged by name where possible. We also hold the Parish Records and Census Records. Paper copies are available to read on request.

We are very happy to arrange visits from schools, care centres etc. and groups, like the knitting group, book clubs and craft groups can book the meeting room for their functions.
